Borno State. A state ravaged by the trauma and fear of living daily with Boko Haram threats, the limited access to lands and villages destroyed by the terrorist groups, the desertification of the soils, the harsh weather and now… a collective suicide. Nothing less. The unbearable life conditions, the absence of any bright future lead a whole young generation of boys and girls to kill themselves.
There are no resources, no decent welcoming center for the youth with addiction problems and there is no training center to do prevention and help understand the extent of the actual drama going under everyone’s eyes.
Unfortunately, Nigeria has neglected the deployment of a true Mental Health Strategy for the country, leaving behind the most crucial part of consideration that needs to be given to its population. The denial had been the most destructive behaviour affecting the capacity of the population and community leaders to face this so predictable issue. Now, this is leaving to opportunist and vicious religious leaders of all churches to jump on this to take the most from the people who have the least.
